Photo provided by Artist.

Viergelyn Chery of Boston, MA is a talented spoken work artist. Performing on stage she is known as vision or Ms. V.C., candidly uplifting audiences with her words, inspiring us all to maintain our individualism and hold on to our victories. Ms. Chery currently working on a book of her work, keep an eye out for this one. Please enjoy the poem she sent it for to the blog.

Influential Catastrophe By: Vision

Able to sustain but not bond.

Realization of repair and control controversially changing.

I seeped into my skin slowly continuously fearlessly learning.

My emotion never surrenders my mind

And my mind leads to the cracks divine.

Fuck the bullshit, I’m passed that.

Why can’t I work it out?

Questions fill my head and I lead myself to a dead end pavement

Surrounded myself with no answer.

Yet again, pieces of me differ into a ball of lump tissue soaked into intimate bullshit.

Distracted, trapped, always willing to listen.

Pieces of me kept hidden, influential catastrophe they say.

All the big mouthed, talented, genuine girl needs is a pair of sensible eyes.

Share the destruction, motivate the change, and fulfill self-worth.

Aspects desegregate my love, keep me bonded.
I’m not foolish -just captivated.

Still lurking in the wind trying to self-uplift myself into something worth trying.

Forgive me for running on about self worth.

But it all comes down to self-encouragement, self-awareness and self-change all not so easy

But have abilities.

So while I surround myself by moving faces, talented spirits and luminous days and years.

I will grasp onto my free spirit and ride her to victory.

Sociologists tell us that the human mind cannot meaningfully grasp numbers higher than a few thousand. Yet, understanding the consequences of our choices requires us to comprehend the incremental effect of millions or billions of small acts. Photographer Chris Jordan’s large-format prints, assembled from thousand of smaller photographs, dramatically translate the raw language of statistics into powerful images of global mass culture that we can respond to emotionally.- www.boston.com

made history as one of the Little Rock Nine, the nine African-American students who desegregated Little Rock Central High School in 1957. The world watched as they braved constant intimidation and threats from those who opposed desegregation of the formerly all-white high school.

Minnijean Brown of the "Little Rock Nine"

, the eldest of four children of Willie and Imogene Brown, was born on September 11, 1941, in Little Rock (Pulaski County). Her mother was a homemaker and nurse’s aid during the crisis, and her father was an independent mason and landscaping contractor. She is the sister of the late Bobby Brown, who was the president of Black United Youth (BUY) in Arkansas in the late 1960s.

Although all of the Nine experienced verbal and physical harassment during the 1957–58 academic year at Central, Trickey was first suspended, and then expelled, for retaliating against the daily torment: specifically, she called one of her tormenters “white trash.” On February 17, 1958, she moved to New York and lived with Drs. Kenneth B. and Mamie Clark, African-American psychologists whose social science research formed the basis for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) argument in the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas case, which held that segregation harmed the self-esteem of African-American children. She graduated from New York’s New Lincoln School, a private progressive school in Manhattan, in 1959.

Brown married Roy Trickey, a fisheries biologist, on September 21, 1967; they have six children. She attended Southern Illinois University and majored in journalism. She later moved to Canada with her husband, where she received a BSW in Native Human Services from Laurentian University and an MSW in social work from Carleton University in Ontario, Canada.

Trickey is a social activist and has worked on behalf of peacemaking, environmental issues, developing youth leadership, diversity education and training, cross-cultural communication, and gender and social justice advocacy. She served in the Clinton administration as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Workforce Diversity at the Department of the Interior from 1999 to 2001. She has taught social work at Carleton University in Ottawa Canada and in various community colleges in Canada.

Trickey currently works for an interactive traveling trip called Sojourn to the Past. Sojourn to the Past is a ten-day interactive history experience through selected U.S. states with 100 high school students learning about the civil rights movement. She was also a guest lecturer at Arkansas State University (ASU) in Jonesboro (Craighead County). She was the recipient of the Mary Gay Shipley Writing Fellowship, as a part of ASU’s Heritage Studies PhD program, and is writing her memoir. She is also the subject of a documentary, Journey to Little Rock: The Untold Story of Minnijean Brown Trickey.

Trickey is the recipient of numerous awards for her community work for social justice, including the Lifetime Achievement Tribute by the Canadian Race Relations foundation and the International Wolf Award for contributions to racial harmony. Trickey, along with the other Little Rock Nine and Daisy Bates, was awarded the prestigious Spingarn Medal by the NAACP in 1958. In 1999, President Bill Clinton presented the nation’s highest civilian award, the Congressional Gold Medal, to the members of the Little Rock Nine.

was formed in 1997 with the objective to draw attention to women’s abilities as percussionists and their participation in rumba and folkloric festivals accross the length and breadth of Cuba.Out of one of Havana’s worst neighbourhoods come seven young women dedicated to break the historic male domination in the field of Rumba – Diunis (the group’s leader), Ada, Amile,Barbara, Greidy, Hilda,& Osmary.

Between them they sing, dance play the congas and all the traditional minor percussion instruments. Most have graduated in Havana’s most innovative Cultural Centre. Many of Rumba Morenas members come from families with a long history of playing the music. This new group offers a departure from the past, a different approach to percussion playing, singing and dancing. At each appearance these women add beauty and harmony to the sounds and interpretations of the numbers, both traditional and modern, which increases the public’s interest in the genre.

Rumba Morena play with deep roots in Cuban culture, their songs fusing Yoruba chants, Santeria dances with boleros, reggaeton and street songs, all within the framework of a strict adherence to classical rumba rhythms. The group has been going seven years playing venues throughout Cuba.

The music forms the spinal column of a 45-minute show. The group are seeking funding to make a video and a DVD which will give a better impression of their creative talents.

One of Rumba Morena’s major ambitions is to take the show to Canada Europe and the USA where they anticipate a warm reception for their special brand of hip-swinging music

The group works under the leadership of Diunis Valdes O’Farrill, a first class rumbera, who has instilled in the other members of the group, continuity of the rumba tradition. In each appearance Rumba Morena wins over their audience, cuban or otherwise, because of their original approach, their professionalism and their individual and collective performances.

Rumba Morena has become an intrinsic part of the Havana cultural scene delighting their audiences with their interpretation of this particular form of Afro-Cuban music.

Sister Corita Kent

Sister Corita Kent 1918-1986

Corita Kent, also known as Sister Corita, gained international fame for her vibrant serigraphs during the 1960s and 1970s. A Sister of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, she ran the Art Department at Immaculate Heart College until 1968 when she left the Order and moved to Boston. Corita’s art reflects her spirituality, her commitment to social justice, her hope for peace, and her delight in the world that takes place all around us.

Corita was born Frances Kent in 1918 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She grew up in Los Angeles and joined the Order of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1936, taking the name Sister Mary Corita.

She graduated from Immaculate Heart College in 1941 and then taught grade school in British Columbia. In 1946 she returned to Immaculate Heart College to teach art. In 1951, she received a master’s degree in art history from the University of Southern California; it is also the year she exhibited her first silkscreen print. Corita’s earliest works were largely iconographic; known as “neo-gothic” they borrowed phrases and depicted images from the Bible.

By the 1960s, she was using popular culture (such as song lyrics and advertising slogans) as raw material for her meaning-filled bursts of text and color. Corita’s cries for peace in the era of Vietnam were not always welcome. In 1965 her “Peace on Earth” Christmas exhibit in IBM’s New York show room was seen as too subversive and Corita had to amend it. However, her work continued to be an outlet for her activism—in Corita’s words:
“I am not brave enough to not pay my income tax and risk going to jail. But I can say rather freely what I want to say with my art.”
By then Corita was the chairman of the famous Immaculate Heart College Art Department. Buckminster Fuller described his visit to the department as “among the most fundamentally inspiring experiences of my life.” Other influential friends of hers included Charles Eames , Ben Shahn, Harvey Cox and the Berrigan brothers.
August was Corita’s time for her own art making. During the three weeks between semesters, she and her students would work round the clock printing new serigraph designs by the hundreds. Corita’s chronic insomnia no doubt made some of this possible, but it was often accompanied by a bleak depression. In 1968 Corita decided to devote herself entirely to making art.

Art work by Sister Corita Kent

She left the Order and Los Angeles, and moved to Boston’s Back Bay. She made numerous commissioned works (Westinghouse Group W ads, book covers and murals) and continued to create her own serigraphs (over 400) in the next 18 years. Still using exuberant splashes of color, the tone of her work became more generally spiritual and introspective. Watercolor “plein air” paintings and great floral silk screens dominated her later works.Corita remained active in social causes and designed posters and billboards for Share, the International Walk for Hunger, Physicians for Social Responsibility and Amnesty International.
The Boston Gas tank on the Southeast Expressway still bears her famous 150-foot rainbow swash, which is a similar to her design for the 1985 Love Stamp.

On Sept. 18, 1986 Corita finally lost her battle with cancer and died at a friend’s home.

A multi-faceted musician, Tania Leon is an international figure in the music world. She has carved a niche for herself in contemporary music as a composer, conductor, and music director, in the process receiving numerous commissions and awards. Tania Leon “has distinguished herself as a proponent of music without category beyond a standard of excellence,” remarked long-time music commentator Howard Mandel in an article for Ear Magazine. “Her enthusiasm for contemporary composers regardless of gender, race, or national origin indicates an all-embracing world view as befits a warm, lively woman who accepts no imposed limits to her own activity.”

The daughter of Oscar Leon Mederos and Dora Ferran, Leon was born in Havana, Cuba, on May 14, 1943, of a mixed ethnic background. Her ancestors hailed from China, Nigeria, France, and Spain. In Havana Leon studied piano, violin, and music theory, earning multiple bachelors degrees and a masters degree in music from the Carlos Alfredo Peyrellado Conservatory. While still a student she wrote her first compositions–boleros, bossa novas, and popular music. From 1964 to 1967 Leon performed as a piano soloist in her native country and acted as music director for a television station in Havana.

Leon immigrated to New York City in 1967. Two years later, she accidentally met Arthur Mitchell, who asked her to accompany on piano his new dance troupe–Dance Theater of Harlem. Leon improvised music to fulfill Mitchell’s rehearsal needs, and before long Mitchell offered Leon the music directorship of the troupe, a position she held until 1980. In addition to her artistic managerial activities, Leon began composing works for the troupe, such as Tones, which she and Mitchell collaborated on in 1970. The ballets The Beloved and Dougla quickly followed. Dougla, in particular, met with success, becoming a regular part of the repertoire of European dance companies.

Although composing was well within the realm of imagination for Leon, at the time there were no women conductors, so she did not consider conducting a viable career choice. “Women conducing a symphony orchestra? Taboo. It was completely unheard of,” Leon recalled to Mandel. “It never crossed my mind.” Yet when the Dance Theater of Harlem performed at the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy in 1971, Leon was unexpectedly given the opportunity to conduct the Julliard Orchestra, which was accompanying the troupe. “I was encouraged by Arthur Mitchell and Gian-Carlo Menotti to work with the orchestra,” reminisced Leon to Anne Lundy in the Black Perspective in Music. “They encouraged me to do that, and I had never done it in my life. It was my very first time, but I picked up the baton, and I conducted the performance.”

Upon returning to the United States, Leon began to study conducting formally with Laszlo Halasz, one of the founders of the New York City Opera. Encouraged, she enrolled at the Julliard School of Music to study with Vincent LaSilva. While working with the Dance Theater, Leon earned a bachelors degree in music and then a masters degree in composition from New York University.

Artist Radiant Jasmin of Randolph, MA has been performing art and creating visual art for years for over 20 years. She is a mother of two children, son Patanjali, 19 and daughter Sakeena, 16. Married to Haji Shearer who a social worker and artist as well. She studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Her artwork is colorful and promotes positivity. Her paintings are on exhibition in many galleries in Massachusetts, her most recent exhibition, “A Life in Full Color” at the Akillian Gallery at Massasoit Community College, was well received, many of students there refused to go back to their classes, wanting to finish viewing all of her work on exhibition. The gallery reception was pared with a several readings of her heartfelt poetry. Radiant Jasmin also teaches art programs for adults and children in many cities throughout Massachusetts her courses include jewelry making, painting, and theatre.

I traveled to Jasmin’s quiet home in Randolph, MA where I met with her over lemon tea. After being greeted by Jasmin’s 16yr old daughter Sakeena’s energentic, and sweet furry white puppy dog, perfectly named snowball, we sat down at the couch and began our interview.

Janina Ordonez: “Which came first your visual art or your poetry?”

Radiant Jasmin: “They pretty much started around the same time- I’ve always been an artist. I come from a family of artist, my Step-Grandfather played trumpet, Aunts and uncles danced, and mother did theatre. As a child I remember creating these long drawn out- week to month long stories with an aunt of mine, who was close to me in age. I remember us creating the characters and acting then out- even over the phone when we’re able to visit each other and drawing the illustrations for our own stories. It was like a soap opera or a series (laughing). And I started poetry probably in my late teens, when I met and started dating my husband Haji. He wrote poetry and being introducing me to more poetry, and began to pick it up.”

Janina Ordonez: “There are many artist’s that create from a what some would consider a “selfish” place-they create for themselves, and if others understand their work then its and added bonus and there are the “giving” artists who create their works for others, kind of the saying, let your light shine so others will have courage to do so too, Do you feel like you create from either of these places?

Radiant Jasmin: “I create from a balance of the both- A lot of it is what makes me feel good often. Like this piece on the table over here- (points to an art piece made with fiber glass on table in the room with us). This piece is called “Hour Glasses of Color” –and it was just that I liked the colors and I wanted to see them next to each other –and I liked that shapes and I wanted to see how they would look next to one another- (laughing) –you know, so a lot me my work is that I am in the moment, and I love the colors and I am just having a great time. But I also produce works, that through prayer- I ask for, works that are going to peace to the world. I believe that art is a manifestation of God’s love and light, and I create my art work to counteract the bad things, like fear and depression, to help bring peace and joy to the world.”

Janina Ordonez: “I heard you say that being an artist is your purpose, how do you feel that you came upon that? Was it just after a certain amount of time of you having been an artist that you said to yourself “Yeah, this is who I am, and this my purpose”, How did your realize it?

Radiant Jasmin: “As a little girl I knew I wanted to be an artist, I didn’t know what medium or what field but being the only child for almost eight years before my younger siblings were born and it I lived with my grandmother for most of those eight years and I kind of felt like I was the little sister of my aunts and uncles who were all involved in the arts in some way many have contributed to it but I was never told that I had to be an artist or that they had to be artists. It was just something you did like sleeping, breathing and walk. It something we do creatively to express our joy of living. Most people around the world incorporate art making into their daily lives, I just think that recently in America that it has been separated from daily life but most cultures do often create art for various purposes.

Janina Ordonez: “In this month, March, is National Month for Women’s History, I remember there was one piece that you had on display at the Akillian Gallery opening that had a symbol of a goddess, what inspired that piece?

Radiant Jasmin: “The name of that piece is Yemeya on a Full Moon Evening (See figure 1). The goddess Yemeya is the African goddess of water and the ocean and is controls the energy between the Earth’s moon and tides, so is very powerful. For me it symbolizes how the female energy in the world is coming back into balance. And a lot of westernized religions have pushed the female down and at the power has been attributed to males. I believe there is an imbalance because of it. Think about it- if you have a mother-you have a father- there is both, one is not more powerful than the other.

Janina Ordonez: “What are some goals that you have for your art work?”

Radiant Jasmin: “ Well because I am a mother, I often find that I’m having to put my art work on hold to taking care of my children , so I have been working on applying into and artist retreat program in New Hampshire that supplies full room and board and supplies for my art, and I would be housed with other artist that there to create as well. I would be able to pretty much wake up and create without any distractions. And hopefully once I am accepted I will be able to work on a project that I’ve been thinking about calling “The three essentials” and it would be based around major issues going on in the world right now, housing, food, and clothing.

Readers please join me in wishing Radiant Jasmin the best in all artist future endeavors!

Deborah Mauristhene, photo provided by Supafly Photography.

Young entrepreneur, Deborah Mauristhene, commonly known as “Deb” amongst her friends, and colleagues at Northeastern University, has tons of items on her daily “To Do” lists. At the age of 22, Deb is a full-time student at NU, majoring in Psychology with a minor in Business. Not at-all waiting to put to work the knowledge gained from her minor, she is currently Chief Executive Officer and Founder of a Boston based event planning company called Illuminous Event Solutions (I.E.S ). She began building the company in 2008, along with her brothers Ernest and Danny Mauristhene. Ernest provided the initial idea of the company and Danny created the first draft of their logo. After a few months their staff began to grow: Sebastian David as Personal Graphic Designer, Eumeraude Petit-Frere as Certified Event Planner, and Peter Faiteau as Media/Promotional Director. Deb Mauristhene is accomplishing a great deal at her age, and is proud to be a shining light to other young adults her age. Between running her company and studying for midterms and finals, you can often catch Deb on Facebook spreading the word about a fabulous event in Boston or sharing words of encouragement with her friends via her statuses.

Sadly, I was unable to meet with Deborah in person for our interview. I came down with the flu that week and didn’t want to risk spreading the virus to Deb or the Northeastern campus (see, I listened to the health commission commercials!). Thankfully, Deborah was willing to answer my questions via e-mail. I think she did a great job and I am grateful for her flexibility. Thank you Deb!

Janina Ordonez: “What inspired you to start Illuminous Event Solutions Company?”

Deborah Mauristhene: “Becoming involved with the Haitian Student Unity organization at NU for several years, starting off as a member of the executive board and doing a lot of public relations work, I climbed the ladder and then became vice president.”

Janina Ordonez: “What words of advice would you give to others beginning to build a business similar to your own?”

Deborah M.: “Network, Network, Network! Because of my involvement with the student organization I mentioned before, I was able to push my networking power to max. And along with that I had to realize that not everyone has your best interest at heart. In my line of work, when dealing with various types of people, you will come across some who are straight forward and others who wear a façade. It is important to know the difference for the future of your business.”

Janina Ordonez: “While creating your business were there some things, personally, that you felt you had to work on?”

Deborah M.: “Being born and growing up into a Christian household and having to constantly please my parents I believe was one of my toughest obstacles. My parents are firm Christians; so when I have to organize, plan, and execute events for a client that leads up until the “wee” hours of the morning, my parents are definitely against that. Censoring my thoughts and feelings were also obstacles I had to overcome. I usually responded to things sharing purely what I was thinking and how I felt about it. But I’ve learned that in the “professional” world it can’t always be as such. Sometimes you may have a client that you don’t enjoy personally but you can’t let that effect the quality of the service that you are providing.”

Janina Ordonez: “What are some goals that you have for yourself and your business?”

Deborah M.: “My team and I aim to be the best at any and everything we do. My business partners already know what I expect when it is time to conduct business. If you want to be taken seriously as an entrepreneur, you need to act accordingly. My goals and hopes are expand the IES brand to nearby states (CT, NY, FL, DC, etc), meet amazing individuals and to make big moves.”

Janina Ordonez: “Are there other artist’s or business owners that inspire you? And why?”

Deborah M.: “First and foremost, GOD…if it was not for my Lord & Savior, I would not have had this gift. In addition, yes, the IES team. There are many other established entrepreneurs who gave our company a chance to collaborate with them on events:

V-World Enterprise, Reginald Charles of Rhoaming Ent., Kenneth R., our personal graphic designer, stage manger, photographers, and DJ (Sebastian David, Dalinda Ifill, Supafly Photography, Image Impressionz, and Ives of Nxt Era Inc.) Edwin Joseph & Zaafir; The Urban Nerdz, Diallo Ferguson, the newest individuals I’ve recently had the chance to work with International Show & YoMellyMell, all the inspiring and devoted fashion designers and models that I’ve personally had the chance to work with.

There are just too many individuals to name. We work alongside some of the best and overall amazing individuals who excel in their field and have a passion for what they do. They produce the level of positivity that I want to surround myself with; people who not only having a burning drive, and goals but they have ACTED and have IMPLEMENTED. I look forward to expanding our IES network and would also like to take this time to say ‘Thank you’, to everyone who has supported IES thus far. You are appreciated!

Hello Everyone,

Welcome to the first edition of J. Ordonez Photo Blog! I want to thank many of you for subscribing and participating. I’m hoping that this blog will help to create connections amongst artist of different arenas and entrepreneurs in the city of Boston. While keeping in mind that I wont be able to compete with the large magazines and all the various networking sites out there, I enjoy being able to add my two cents to the bucket.

This edition celebrates women and poetry. Saluting both the national month of women in history (March) and national poetry month (April). I was able to interview two hard-working, and dedicated women from the cities Randolph and Boston. One of them deeply involved in the arts, creating and teaching others to create and the other juggling school full-time and co-ownership of a company that promotes events in the arts.

Also included in this edition are some great poems from a very talented poetess along with small bios of extraordinary women in history and listing of art events in Boston.

I hope you all enjoy my two cents. Please feel free to comment on any of the articles.

☼ Janina Ordonez
